Leaving Atlanta once more, we made a two-travel day trip to Gulfport, Florida. Gainesville, FL, was our stopover location, home of the University of Florida. Arriving after dark, we checked in and made a quick trip out for dinner and back to the hotel. The next morning we decided to explore the UF campus via car before checking out and heading to Gulfport.
The Florida campus encompasses over 2,000 acres, has over 57,000 students, and is rated the 5th (tied) best public university in the U.S. as ranked by U.S. News & World Report. I did notice many bikes and motorscooters around campus to enhance one’s chances of getting to class on time!
Taking the more scenic but less direct route, we made it to Gulfport in the late afternoon and found our new temporary home for January and February.
Gulfport is proud of its “Old Florida, quirky weird vibe”. Located just South and West of St. Petersburg, its’ waterfront beach and village are charming with colorful cottages and a shimmering Boca Ciega Bay. This is an easy biking and parking town (No meters). The Pinellas Trail for biking and walking stretches North to Tarpon Springs and South to below St. Petersburg, over 47 miles with plenty of water views and artistic displays.
A nice fishing pier, skateboard area, and beach volleyball ate actively utilized. There are music events and even a drum circle occasionally. We saw a Swing dancing event at the Gulfport Casino.
I believe we will be kept busy with not only Gulfport events but also in easily drivable events in St. Petersburg, Bradenton, Dunedin, Tampa, Longboat Key, and Sarasota
